The foundations of the Department of Economics at University of the Punjab were laid in 1919 when a desk to study economics was established. 2019 marks 100 years of Economics research and study at the University of the Punjab. To mark this glorious journey, centennial celebrations were formally marked by a ceremony held on November 9, 2019 at Syed Pervez Hassan Environmental Law Center auditorium.
Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, S.I. was the chief guest. The even was largely attended by Deans, Directors, Chairpersons, alumni and students.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor commended the contributions of the Economics department to the society and the university. He reiterated his commitment to support up-gradation of the department into a School of Economics.
Earlier, the Chairman of the department, Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Anwar, highlighted the contributions of the department and its glorious journey spanning over a century. He lauded the efforts of previous faculty and academic leadership, as well as those of the current faculty and staff.
Three notable economists. Dr. Rashid Amjad (Director, Graduate Institute of Development Studies, LSE), Dr. Abid Aman Burki (Professor of Economics at LUMS), and Dr. Azhar Hassan Nadeem (Senior Fellow LSE) presented their views on the current state of Pakistan’s economy and way forward.
